Today we are having USM balloonmen parade and evolution/celebrity selection in the RUS101 class. It can be seen that each group members are sitting together and many of them are wearing the same t-shirt as an identity for their group. In groups of 5, they are wearing their own group costume using mask, sarong and balloons. It was so amazing that their costumes are designed in very creative and innovative way. Each group is then given a piece of paper and each group leader is asked to write down group member’s name and describe their costume in 10 words. After passed up the paper, the celebrity selection begins and all the students are asked to parade in the building due to rainy day. The judges are giving marks based on certain criteria. After the marks have been calculated, the top 4 are chosen to release the fountain balloons during merdeka show. Also, Encik Wan asked for 4 groups of obelisk volunteers to carry their obelisk to Penang Times Square. Since that it is still raining, the plan for site visit at Penang Times Square for this afternoon has to postpone to tomorrow morning.

29/08/09(Saturday)

We are asked to meet at Penang Times Square at 10am for USM balloonmen procession rehearsal. We went there by our own transport since that the bus service is not provided by USM. Many of them are late and the rehearsal start at 11am something. We are then asked to gather in the mall and  Encik Rusli brief us about the merdeka show. After that, we are brought to the site where the celebration takes place. Encik Wan, Encik Rusli and Encik Mohd Najib are trying to explain to us what will happen and what we suppose to do on that day. We are taught how to parade from the entrance to the water feature and the way to parade around the water feature. Besides, we are also gets to know where our booth is place at and where to tie up the balloons.

30/08/09 (Sunday)

            This is the final day of the project 5B– Merdeka Installation. Everyone is heading to TimeSquare on that day. Due to the transportation difficulty, some of the students went to TimeSquare by their own vehicle, whereas those who do not have a vehicle are arranged to gather at HBP and go by USM Komuter bus at 5p.m. Students who reach the destination assigned their work into groups and start to work on the project such as filling helium into balloons, tight the balloons around the site, set up balloon drop, set up obelisk as balloon holder, etc. Besides the project held by USM, there is actually a lot of small store selling various stuff, for example the foods and beverages, clothes, accessories, etc. In addition, a band with guitar, keyboard, and drum was performing on the stage to make the event to be more exciting.

            When the time reaches 11p.m., every student started to change their costume and was ready for the Merdeka celebration. After get things done, they chat with each other and took some photos in order to keep the memorable day in mind. Everyone was expecting for the celebration. At 11:57p.m., students were asked to shout “Wéwewa” with a slow rhythm. After that, obelisk 1 & 2 and line A balloon man proceed to fountain; obelisk 3 & 4 and line B balloon man proceed to fountain; and lastly, the celebrity balloon man appears.

          12a.m, it was the most exciting moment of the day. Every people in TimeSquare were shouting “MERDEKA” and wishing each other “Happy Merdeka”. At the same time, the fountain balloons, obelisk balloons, individual balloons were released, and the balcony balloons dropped. The picture of balloons flies to the sky was beautiful, it makes a lot of people took photos of the balloons.

The word “existence” was come from Latin word “exitere” meaning appear, arise, and become. Existence indicates the fact or state of continued being. It is an actual being whether people likes it or accepts it or not. For example, the survival in the earth such as animals, trees, seas, lands, stones are considered as a natural existence which cannot be set aside when making any decision related to constructions, buildings, etc. Hence, existence plays an important part in the decision on whether the particular building is suitable for the location.

CONDOMINUIM

Intention

With the intention of getting people to feel safe and comfortable, enjoy quality living environment, and live in condo lifestyle, a condominium is planned to build. The owner of condo will not have the hassles of maintenance, repairs and security concerns. For singles, couples and families, condominium is the most suitable place to stay.

Actors

In order to build a condominium, members from different majors such as architecture, quantity surveyors, interior design, building technology, planning, and construction management are needed. They are then gathered for a meeting and assign job for each of them.

Act

After assigning of work, actors proceed to the process such as drawing of architectural drawings, planning of the cost and quantity of materials to be used, designing the shape of the building, etc.

Rules

Actors must obey the rules while building the condominium. For example, architectures have to obtain an architect’s license, or else, the construction is considered illegal. Besides this, they must have one leader for each group of majors so that there is always a decision maker and this might prevent workers from quarreling.

Product

The end product, complete condominium is ready for sale. People can start to enjoy the facilities provided.

Site is the place where structure is to be located. Therefore, choosing a location is significant in construction. Actors must choose a spot base on the shape of the condominium. For example, they consider whether the size of the land is enough for the building; is the land concrete enough for building high level condominium.

Content 1: What I read today

            Due to newly known course mate and the study environment, I feel strange when I firstly went into the lecture hall. The subject I attended was Integrated Studio 1. The lecturer, Encik Wan is an active person who full of humor and like to joke during class.

            On that day, I learned the six elements of production which include intention, act, product, actor, rules, and site. In order to produce a product, we must first have the intention on what to achieve. Then we have to take action such as drawing, designing, building, etc to produce the product. Besides this, actors like producers and individuals are needed in the production process. They need to follow the rules such as laws and regulations, climate change, social responsibility, etc. Lastly, site is also important that will affect the production. Next, Encik Wan shows and go through with us the programs and schedule in the first semester.

            After the class, we were told that there will be ten projects in this semester. We were given one hour to fill in the grouping form and register ourselves in ten different groups. The reason is to let us get to know more friends and mix with different course mate.

Content 2: My Big Bang

            We were told by seniors that there will be a second orientation for HBP students and asked to choose our group members, five people in one group.  Group leaders were called for a briefing. 15 minutes later, everyone went inside the hall and listen to the purpose of organizing the second orientation and the events that will be held. It is to let HBP students to understand more and cooperate well with each other in the coming weeks. Seniors then collect RM36 from us for the use of gaming, meal, and purchasing of T-shirt.
